The Scary Reality of Passion Projects

If you're like most people, you have at least one passion project that you've been working on for far too long without any real progress to show for it. And if you're really like most people, that passion project is currently collecting dust in a dark corner of your basement, just waiting for the day when you finally have the time/money/motivation to get it off the ground. Well, I'm here to tell you that day may never come—at least, not if you don't have a solid plan in place.

Why Passion Projects Fail

There's no denying that passion projects can be tough. They often require a lot of time, effort, and money with no guarantee of success. But I would argue that the biggest reason passion projects fail is because their creators don't treat them like real businesses. They don't sit down and map out a plan for how they're going to make money off their project—they just sort of wing it and hope for the best. And we all know what happens when you hope for the best...you usually end up disappointed.

How to Make Your Passion Project a Success

If you're serious about making your passion project a success, then you need to treat it like a real business. That means creating a spreadsheet listing your projected income and expenses month by month for at least three years. This will help you see which scenarios work and which don't so that you can avoid making the same mistakes over and over again. It will also show you whether or not your project has a future. And if it does have a future, it will give you a better idea of how much money you need to invest in order to make it a reality.

Passion projects are hard—there's no getting around that fact. But if you want your passion project to succeed, you need to treat it like a real business from the very beginning. That means creating a budget and sticking to it. It means being realistic about your goals and expectations. And it means being willing to put in the hard work necessary to make your dream a reality. If you can do all of those things, then there's no reason why your passion project shouldn't be a success.
