How to Overcome Procrastination (by a procrastinator)
I’ll just start with a disclaimer that this post may be procrastinated. But in all seriousness, we’ve all been there. That passion project we’re eager to start but somehow haven’t gotten around to it yet... Or maybe you have started it but keep getting sidetracked. If any of this sounds familiar, you might be a master procrastinator like me. But don’t worry, there is hope! Here are some tips on how to overcome procrastination, from one procrastinator to another.
1. Accept that you are a procrastinator
The first step is always the hardest, but you can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. So embrace your inner procrastinator! It’s not a bad thing. We just work differently than others. You might even find that, once you accept it, it’s not as big of a deal as you thought.
2. Make a plan
When you have a project you want to work on, sit down and make a plan. What needs to be done? Break it down into smaller tasks, so it doesn’t seem as daunting. And then put it in writing! Having a physical reminder will help keep you on track better than if it’s just floating around in your head. Plus, seeing everything laid out in front of you will help give you some motivation to get started.
3. Set a deadline
This one is key for me personally. If there isn’t an external deadline, I will never get anything done! Giving yourself a timeline for each task will help keep you accountable and on track. And if possible, try to make the deadlines sooner rather than later so you don’t have too much time to procrastinate!
There is hope for us procrastinators! By following these steps, hopefully, you can overcome your urge to procrastinate and finally get started (or finish) that passion project of yours. And remember, accept that you are a procrastinator and embrace it! It’s not a bad thing. We just work differently than others. So go out there and conquer your goals!
